Gradients are graphic elements where the color changes gradually from one color to another. Many website elements can be given a gradient background, and they can be applied in a few other ways, as in shadows on text.
They make a website more distinctive, but there is also a few possible downsides. One is that foreground colors may have different contrast.
Also, if the same foreground color is used on a gradient background, it may look like different colors at different places on the gradient.
Finally, if the background is not white or a solid color, you may lose
the ability to use some
.jpg images and have to use larger
.gif images instead.
Here is an example:
.jpg auto icon worked outside of the gradient because its background
was white. It did not work inside the gradient because the white background shows
against the gradient.
.png auto icon worked even inside the gradient because its background
is transparent. It actually didn't make a lot of difference because the images are
small, but a large .png image would be much larger than a .jpg.
